Bachelor of Music in Performance and Pedagogy
A student pursuing the Bachelor of Music in Performance and Pedagogy is interested in becoming a uniquely skilled instructor within the music industry, while pursuing a high level of performance. Graduates with this degree will broaden their career choice by studying repertoire specific to their instrument, entrepreneurship skills, and appropriate teaching techniques to build a successful private lesson studio.
- BMped graduates complete 120 credit hours toward their degree completing in 4 years.
- Longer applied lessons and recitals are part of the degree.
- Internship focuses on some aspect of the music industry.
Prospective music education majors are required to submit an online application to be considered. Candidates must also meet admission requirements and follow all academic dates and deadlines as listed.

In order to graduate with a Bachelor of Music in Performance and Pedagogy, students must complete the following program requirements:
- A minimum of 120 credit hours distributed between general education (33 hours), fundamentals and theory (16 hours), professional education (19 hours), applied music (41), and other studies in music (11).
- An internship tied to methods coursework.
Students opting for the BMped will have the tools and ability to maintain lifetime learning and pursue a wide range of career paths when needed, whether it being performers, studio teachers, or music entrepreneurs. They will continue to thrive artistically and professionally, given the tools and resources provided in the program, and make a positive contribution to the society through quality music making and teaching.
BMped degree candidates will take four pedagogy courses at 2 credits each, as well as advanced chamber music and music entrepreneurship coursework.

You will perform over 20 times a year!
As a member of the Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, String Orchestra, Collegiate Chorale, Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Band, you will perform over 20 times a year on campus and throughout the city of Chicago.
The Midwest Clinic
VanderCook co-founded The Midwest Clinic: an international band and orchestra conference held in Chicago with more than 18,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 40 countries. Throughout the history of The Midwest Clinic, VanderCook is the only college Symphonic Band invited to perform every year.
