Course Description

Every Child Can!© (ECC) is an introduction to Dr. Suzuki’s philosophy and its application to Suzuki education. For parents, teachers, prospective teachers and others, this course provides an inspiring, in-depth look at the Suzuki approach to teaching and learning. In addition to exploring the elements of the Suzuki approach and its far-reaching goals, it includes an introduction to learning styles, history of the development of Suzuki education, the role of parents, the importance of Suzuki pedagogical training, and an overview of the SAA’s role in supporting teachers and parents. A fast-paced, engaging and inspiring program, ECC includes video materials and SAA-developed courseware, and provides each participant with useful reference materials (manuals) for later study. This course is required for all new Suzuki teachers, but open to non-teachers, prospective teachers, parents, administrators, and all others interested in learning about Suzuki approach to education. It is not instrument-specific. Experienced Suzuki teachers are also encouraged to participate for renewed inspiration or review. All participants successfully completing this course will be registered with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. as having completed the Every Child Can course. This course is a prerequisite for continued registered Suzuki Teacher Training Courses. This course also serves as an introduction to Suzuki philosophy and methodology for any individual whether they intend to continue registered training or not.

Instructor

Dr. Laurie Scott

Dr. Laurie Scott is Associate Professor of Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, she serves as the director of The University of Texas String Project and the Musical Lives string program at UT Elementary School. Previous to this appointment, Dr. Scott served as professor of violin and viola and director of music education studies at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. As a university professor she has received both the Teaching Excellence Award from the School of Music and from the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin.

A former middle and high school orchestra director, she now mentors young professionals toward successful lives as string educators. In every facet of her teaching Dr. Scott serves as an advocate for inclusive and diverse music classrooms, adult music learners, and access to quality music instruction for all children. She is a registered teacher trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas, continues to maintain a private violin studio, and works weekly with the students in the Musical Lives orchestra program at UT Elementary School. Her former students have become exemplary string educators, professional studio and symphony musicians, and passionate arts advocates.

She is co-author of the books Mastery for Strings, and From the Stage to the Studio: How Fine Performers become Great Teachers… Laurie Scott along with William Dick and Winifred Crock, are the co-authors of Learning Together: Sequential Repertoire for Solo Strings or String Ensembles and received a Creating Learning Community award for their work related to Suzuki in the Schools. In 2020 Dr. Scott was recognized by alumni as one of the “Texas Ten” most influential and inspiring professors at UT Austin and most recently received the Marvin J. Rabin national award for Community Service from the American String Teachers Association.
