Freedom of Expression

VanderCook College of Music is committed to fostering an environment that embraces academic freedom and artistic expression.  We believe that the pursuit of knowledge and creative expression are enriched when faculty, students, and staff are free to express their intellectual and artistic perspectives without fear of censorship or undue restriction.

 

Within our community, respectful expression of thoughts and ideas is essential to grow and thrive as lifelong learners.  Freedom of expression comes with responsibility. We seek to foster a community where open dialogue can occur respectfully and thoughtfully, allowing for meaningful engagement that is enriched by differing viewpoints.  Listening, empathy, and understanding are essential skills to develop in educators and leaders.  These life skills provide the foundation for critical thinking, problem solving, and healthy discourse needed in our school communities, workplaces, and society.
