Elgin Mariachi Education Workshop - Summer 2025

The Elgin Mariachi Education Workshop is hosted annually by School District U-46, in conjunction with Music Education Consultants, Inc.

During the workshop, participants will engage in instruction on all Mariachi instruments (except harp), Mariachi history and culture, song styles and techniques, best performance practices, and will receive program-building resources to support the implementation of a Mariachi education program at their school/district.  All instructional materials will be provided, and participants are asked to bring a guitar, violin, and/or trumpet with them to the workshop.  Instruction will be available at a beginning level or an intermediate/advanced level.

    • Professional – $500
    • Undergraduate Student – $100

Beginner – Participants will learn foundational performance techniques and instructional pedagogy for teaching an entry or beginning level Mariachi course, including Mariachi song styles, culture, and traditions, as well as instructional resources and tools available to support instructional delivery and curriculum development.

Intermediate/Advanced – Participants will learn advancing performance techniques and instructional pedagogy for teaching a Mariachi course of intermediate or advanced level students, including more complex Mariachi song styles, building upon prior learning about Mariachi culture and traditions, as well as instructional resources and tools available to support instructional delivery and curriculum development.

VanderCook offers participants the opportunity to earn 3 graduate credits for $180 by attending clinic sessions and concerts followed by the submission of session reports that include the following:

  • Upload scans of handouts, concert programs, or share session links to the MECA office.
  • Develop written summary outlines of each session.
  • Write personal reflection essay reports (2-3 pages) of each session.
