Introducing Dr. Barry Manilow
Welcome to the VanderFamily, Dr. Barry Manilow. On Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Barry Manilow was presented an honorary Doctor of Music Education honoris causa. In addition to his incredible contributions as a singer, songwriter, musician, and entertainer, Manilow has served thousands of students through his Manilow Music Project. The project recognizes dedicated music teachers and helps bring music and musical instruments to schools around the nation.

On a more serious note he explained that while other awards he’s received were for his work as a performer, “this is the first time that anybody has ever acknowledged me as being a musician…I’ll never forget this.”
The music icon wrapped up his farewell concert in Detroit with a surprise honor when he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music Education degree during his performance at Little Caesars Arena.

Currently serving as the Director of Bands at Monaco Middle School in Las Vegas, NV, Y.L. takes pride in serving both students and the community with integrity and dedication. In addition to his role as an educator, he continues to perform on some of the world’s biggest stages, bringing the same passion and excellence to every performance.
His career bridges performance and education in a way that truly reflects VanderCook’s mission. We’re proud to call Y.L. part of the VanderCook family.

Founded by Barry Manilow, The Manilow Music Project is dedicated to putting instruments into the hands of middle and high school students and supporting the teachers who inspire them.
By providing instruments, scholarships, and resources to school music programs across the country, the Manilow Music Project helps ensure that young musicians have the tools they need to grow and thrive. The project also honors the hard work and dedication of music educators, recognizing their vital role in shaping students’ lives.
