Music & Professional Education

What is the music education area of study?

VanderCook College of Music instills a skill set that the next generation of music educators will need to educate with efficiency.

All music education majors choosing to complete the Bachelor of Music Education (BMEd) degree, the Bachelor of Music Education (Pre-Certification) (BMpc) degree or the Bachelor of Music in Performance and Pedagogy (BMped) degree will receive a thorough understanding of how to teach music methodology to children of all ages. At VanderCook, music education classes are designed to provide future teachers with tools and techniques that exceed the national standards for music education.

While music education degree requirements vary, based on chosen degree and track, all music education courses transform student comprehension, not only as a musician, but also as a teacher who can implement training in the classroom.

Music & Professional Education Program Structure

Music education courses provide candidates with the knowledge to complete desired degree work and use that understanding to teach children beginning through advanced concepts in instrumental, general music, and choral settings.
Music education courses also address organization and administration methods within the context of elementary and secondary schools. These include mechanisms for incorporating computer technology and other modernized advancements into school music programs.

Music Education Graduation Requirements

Music education is one of five major study areas completed by all undergraduates. Students must adhere to the following guidelines while completing their music education coursework:

  • Declare either an instrumental or choral track.
  • Complete required program credit hours; 21 hours for instrumental-track candidates or 20 hours for choral-track candidates.
  • Complete all necessary pre-clinical experiences tied to coursework.
  • Show a proficiency in course-level and program outcomes.
