A native of Chicago, Jeremy Rowland brings 8 years’ experience as educator in Chicago Public School and South Holland School District 150. He holds a BMEd from VanderCook College of Music, a MMEd from Northwestern University, a MS from the University of St. Francis, and obtained National Board Certification in Early Adolescent-Young Adulthood Music in 2020. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Music Education at Northwestern University researching quality teacher assessment, popular music pedagogy, and music as an intervention for enculturation. Through his work he aims to mitigate inequity within the contexts of music making, teaching, and learning. Jeremy actively advises music teachers towards evidence-based & inclusive practices as a National Board mentor for the Chicago Teacher’s Union Foundation, where he has successfully led 8 practicing high school educators in the district to earn the certificate.
Additionally, his community-based work has led to the development of a General Music curriculum for The People’s Music School, emphasizing music literacy and cultural competencies for K-5 students in the Uptown and Albany Park neighborhoods. Through this work, he impacted instruction for 780 students and managed 12 music educators in their transition to online instruction. To expand his community work with active practitioners, he has most recently presented an ethnographic approach to music of the West African Diaspora at the 2022 Society of Ethnomusicology Joint Annual Conference and strategies for utilizing student- centered Rap & Hip-Hop instruction at the 2023 Illinois Music Educators Conference.
