This course identifies meritorious repertoire at all levels for both programmatic and personal growth. Primary activities include experiences with the core wind band repertoire included in the revised first volume of Teaching Music Through Performance and Band, in-depth forum-style discussions about additional quality repertoire, and the creation of a four-year cyclic curriculum tailored specifically to your band program’s needs.

Dr. Jay W. Gilbert has enjoyed the longest tenure (22 years) in the 120-year history of the band program at Doane University in Nebraska. He is the Director of Instrumental Music and Chair of the Music Department where he conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Community/Concert Band. He has been a guest conductor throughout the U.S. and Canada, and has also served as a presenter for numerous state conventions as well as the Midwest International Band/Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. He also is an active composer and arranger with several published compositions for band. Every summer, he is honored to conduct the middle-level band at the Kansas State University Band Camp.
 
Dr. Gilbert conducted a study of quality wind band literature that is often cited in current research. He is also a contributing scholar to the series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band and a contributing author to the book The Art of Band Interpretation. Dr. Gilbert has received several awards including two Distinguished Service Awards from the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, three Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association, an Artist’s Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council, and the Zenon Hansen Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to Doane. He was recognized by Doane as Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the college’s student congress, and was inducted into the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Band Hall of Fame.

The summer online term officially begins on Monday, June 10. The week prior to June 10, you'll be added as a new Schoology user. Be on the lookout for an email from noreply@schoology.com or wfong@vandercook.edu with log-in instructions. Once you are given credentials, simply visit www.online.vandercook.edu to login. On the morning of June 10, you'll have access to your classroom and course material.

Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.

You’ll have the opportunity to work at your own pace each week while completing assignments and posting responses to discussion questions. You’ll constantly be interacting with your instructor and classmates online, and working through new material each week. We know how crazy summer schedules can get, so our instructors try to make everything as flexible as possible!
