With a focus on primary grades, pre-school, and children with developmental differences, participants will learn to create music and movement repertoire that lays the foundation for musical learning. Activities will focus on developmentally appropriate practice, learning through play, and making connections between musical exploration, language and literacy.

Instructor: Dr. Herbert Marshall


Herbert Marshall, Ph.D., is Professor of Music Education at Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music (Berea, OH), where he is the Early Childhood and Classroom Music specialist. He holds degrees from Michigan State University, Syracuse University, and Temple University, all in music education. He taught K-12 school music for 11 years in upstate New York before moving into teacher preparation. He is a member of NAfME, ECMMA, AOSA, the Society for Music Teacher Education, OAKE, ISME, the Alliance for Active Music Making, and the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. He holds Orff-Schulwerk and GIML certifications.
Dr. Marshall is the author of Strategies for Success in Musical Theatre: A Guide for Music Directors in School, College, and Community Theatre, published by Oxford University Press. He serves on the advisory board of Music Educators Journal, and his writing on topics of teacher preparation, early childhood, classroom music, multicultural music, musical theatre and music acquisition can be found in publications by NAfME, Rowman & Littlefield, ECMMA, Oxford and GIA. He is a frequent presenter at state, national, and international conferences. He maintains an active schedule as a clinician, consultant, and conductor, and leads workshops for the Gordon Institute of Music Learning and the Alliance for Active Music Making.
