Band Director Academy

Band Director Academy (BDA) is a multi-day professional development workshop for band directors. BDA will be held Friday, June 23 – Monday, June 26, 2017 at New York City’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) and led by Rodney Whitaker, Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, and Terell Stafford, Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University, in addition to other prominent jazz educators. BDA focuses on the essentials of teaching jazz, emphasizing hands-on learning and practical techniques.

For more than 20 years, JALC’s “Essentially Ellington” program has been a popular aspect of many school jazz programs. Whether you are a seasoned “EE veteran” or fresh out of school, teaching in a fully fledged program or just starting out, urban, suburban, rural or somewhere in between, playing Ellington’s music will enrich the lives of your students and community. We believe in a practical, literature-based, hands-on approach that is informed by the aesthetic choices made by our greatest composers, arrangers and practitioners of America's music: jazz.

This four-day session will focus on improvisation. By utilizing listening, demonstration, discussion and then practical application, attendees will gain an insight into how to transfer these specific techniques to their band room.
