6747 Beyond The Notes: Leading research & Best Practices to Enhance Your Teaching

Are you looking for a course that’s practical, inspiring, musical and fun, all while helping you become a better teacher? This course is jam-packed with a variety of relevant topics facing today's educators. Calling upon the research and writings of Pink, Kohn, Dweck, Demming, Deci, Coyle, Abeles, Robinson and others, Chris Gleason will lead participants through topics such as the Danielson Framework, talent, practice, mindset, motivation, assessment, student learning objectives, and Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance. Participants will take part in rehearsal demonstrations and see many examples of projects, portfolios, concert ideas, teaching plans, technology uses, and student artifacts from a CMP classroom. Participants will need to bring two or three scores that they are considering using this school year, their major instrument, and a laptop computer.

Gleason,_Chris_headshot_2013Chris Gleason earned his BME from UW-Eau Claire in 1997 and his Masters Degree from UW-LaCrosse in 2002. He teaches band at Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Mr. Gleason's bands have been selected to perform at events such as the "New Wisconsin Promise Conference", and the 2006 and 2009 Wisconsin State Music Conferences. The Patrick Marsh Middle School Band has commissioned composers such as Samuel R. Hazo (Blue and Green Music -2009), Brian Balmages (Sun Cycles – 2012), and currently Michael Sweeney. In 1992 Mr. Gleason was selected as the Wisconsin Governor’s Scholar to Interlochen Arts Camp. Mr. Gleason has performed professionally at Disneyland and the Mall of America. He has been guest conductor of numerous camps and festivals including the National Band Association –Wisconsin Junior High All-State Band, Tri-State Honors Band, UW-Milwaukee Honors Band and UW-Whitewater Band Camp. He is the chair of the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) Committee and the chair of the Wisconsin State Middle Level Honors Band. He has taught CMP Workshops at VanderCook College of Music, the Los Angeles Unified School District in California, The Total Music Educators Workshop, numerous school districts in the Midwest, and recently in Hong Kong. Mr. Gleason was the recent recipient of the Vi Miller Award for Excellence by Dane Arts. Mr. Gleason is the founder and organizer of the Band Festival at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. Mr. Gleason is a member of NBA, WMEA, and NAfME.
