6806 Engaging and Creative Experiences in the Secondary General Music Classroom

Join Our Mailing List

The secondary general music experience comes at a pivotal time in the life of an adolescent.  A broader curiosity and awareness of cultural and social landscapes begins to develop as well as a desire to engage with the world in a meaningful and relevant manner.  Music, and the arts, plays an integral role in feeding our students’ curiosities and shaping their awareness.  How can we, as music educators, successfully cultivate and nurture this curiosity and awareness and prepare our students to engage in the world with musical positivity and creativity?

This MECA course is designed to introduce and workshop creative, engaging and culturally relevant learning experiences in the secondary general music classroom.  Participants will engage in a myriad of activities, projects, approaches and discussions that focus on communal music making, perceptive listening, music criticism/journalism, engagement strategies, cultural relevancy, technology implementation, musicology, best practices, and cultivating the life-long music learner/maker .

It is of vital importance that we inspire the %80 of students who do not participate in BOC (band, orchestra, choir) to value and engage in music for the rest of their lives; to be life-long music learners and makers.  Join me as we journey towards that end.

Instructors: Leo Park

Leo Park teaches orchestra and various non-BOC music electives at Northside College Preparatory High School in Chicago, Illinois.  He is instructor of Secondary General Music Methods in the Graduate Studies Program at VanderCook College of Music and has served as instructor of String Pedagogy and Methods at both North Park University (Chicago) and Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago).  Leo is founder of Chi City Music Makers - a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing Chicago youth and adults with nurturing spaces to be musically creative.  He is a graduate of DePaul University and VanderCook College of Music and is a 2010 recipient of the Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction award.  With over 12 years of experience teaching secondary general music, Leo is excited to continue sharing and learning alongside those who are on the front lines every single day dedicated to educating our youth and shaping them to become noble, compassionate, empathetic, productive and creative stewards of the world.
