Marching Band Methods for a Successful Season

This weekend course provides high school band directors with strategies to begin or continue developing a successful fall marching band program. Resources from leading educators and designers in the fields of music education and pageantry arts will be explored and discussed. Topics include pre-season planning, show design, music and visual pedagogy, techniques for rehearsal effectiveness, student leadership, booster organizations, and program administration.

Instructor: Steven Pyter

Steven_PyterSteven Pyter is a high school band director, music arranger, and drill designer.  Prior to joining the faculty at Joliet West High School, Mr. Pyter served as Director of Bands at Plainfield North High School and Lake Park High School.  Ensembles under his direction have performed at the Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival, the Illinois Music Education Conference, Bands of America events, and Walt Disney World.  His bands have been consistent finalists at the State of Illinois Invitational Marching Band Championships.  Steve also spent eight years on the instructional staff of the nationally acclaimed Lancer Marching Band, including multiple appearances as Bands of America Grand National semi-finalists and Regional finalists.

 
Mr. Pyter has received multiple Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association.  He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Northern Illinois University and a Master of Music Education degree with teacher certification from VanderCook College of Music, where he served as graduate assistant to the President of the college, Dr. Charles Menghini.
