TECHing the General Music Classroom: Integrating Technology in the 21st Century

This course lays the foundation for integrating technology effectively in the music classroom while maintaining the integrity of an existing active music-making curriculum within a 21st century curricular framework. The course is designed for all music teachers regardless of whether they have limited or considerable expertise with technology applications such as PowerPoint (Google Slides), SMART Notebook, and/or tablet apps including Seesaw, Book Creator, Explain Everything, Educreations, Flipgrid, Socrative, and GarageBand.

This course is packed with animated visuals, presentations, iPad/Chromebook/tablet activities, and SMART Board/interactive whiteboard application templates, lessons, activities and assessments for PreK-8 general music teachers. While this course is designed for all teachers, teachers using the Orff Schulwerk, Kodály, or Music Learning Theory approaches can enhance their instruction with digital manipulatives, engaging center activities and assessments using templates provided. Each assignment may be customized to the curriculum of each participating teacher.

Course Learning Objectives: 

  • Analyze and assess existing curriculum, review curricular frameworks, to identify specific areas to begin creating resources.
  • Use various apps to create manipulatives, lessons, assessments, and activities for the general music program.
  • Create animated activities in Powerpoint or similar Presentation App
  • Create lessons and assessments using Smart Notebook applications
  • Design and Administer activities and assessments using templates and rubrics.
  • Create and manage digital portfolios in Seesaw
  • Become acquainted a variety of apps in general music education
  • Discuss Arts Integration in STEM

Instructor: Manju Durairaj

Durairaj,_Manju_headshot_2012Manju Durairaj (MMEd ‘03) was born and raised in India. She studied in London, England, and was involved in graduate research projects on comparative pedagogical practices of Indian (carnatic) and Western Music. Durairaj is certified in Orff Schulwerk, having completed her levels training at VanderCook, George Mason University, University of St. Thomas, and at the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria. She currently teaches PreK-5 general music at the Latin School of Chicago. She is president of the Greater Chicago Orff Chapter, has presented at ISME, AOSA, OAKE, ILMEA, ECMMA, MKMEA and NAfME (formerly MENC), and has been published in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education.
