Sound Decisions About Quality Concert Band Repertoire
ONLINE
June 7–August 1, 2021
The curriculum of every band program is the music. Therefore, selection of music for the highest quality to broaden, refine and advance developing musicians should be of paramount interest. This course is for directors teaching at any level and will help you reset your knowledge of the meritorious repertoire for both programmatic and personal growth. Primary activities will include experiences with the core wind band repertoire included in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series, discussions amongst course members, sharing of information about additional quality repertoire, and creating a curriculum tailored specifically to the needs of the band program of each course participant. The course will also create an annotated bibliography of pieces identified by participants, who will have an opportunity to meet and interact with the authors in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series.
Instructor: Dr. Jay Gilbert
Dr. Jay W. Gilbert has enjoyed the longest tenure (28 years) in the 147-year history of the Doane Band Program. He is the Director of Instrumental Music and conducts the Doane Concert Band and Community/Concert Band and the Doane Tiger Pep Band. Dr. Gilbert’s study of quality wind band literature in the 1990s is still frequently cited in current research. He is also a contributing scholar to the series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band and a contributing author to the book The Art of Band Interpretation. In 2016, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble gave the opening performance at the John Philip Sousa Festival concert at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. under his direction.
