On-campus courses are generally held

by the course instructor.

PLEASE NOTE: All on-campus courses will have an online component. Each course will require students to engage in one pre-course discussion, at least one post-course discussion, and a capstone project due two weeks after the course. Online credentials will be available three weeks prior to the start of each course.

Innovative Rehearsal Techniques to Boost Artistry, Engagement
& Retention

June 8–July 31, 2020

Are you looking for your band or orchestra classes to be fun, interactive and highly engaging, while still being able to teach the fundamentals needed to play high quality repertoire? This class is designed to be 100% fun and 100% practical, and is applicable for all instrumental music teachers, beginning through advanced levels. Learn how to facilitate, teach and plan intriguing and FUN lesson activities that span the full spectrum of fundamental instrument skills to performance repertoire. Participants will simulate ensemble games, creative and informal assessment strategies, improvisational and experimental experiences to learn discriminatory listening, collective-leadership activities (Orpheus Process), and other artistic processes and experiments that enhance the essential habits of musicianship.


Glen Schneider

Glen Schneider (MMEd ‘06) teaches band at Metea Valley High School in Aurora, IL, and directs the Metea Valley Symphony Orchestra, Marching Mustangs, Pep Band and MV Jazz Orchestra. Schneider previously taught band at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, IL; the Oswego Community School District 308 in Oswego, IL, where he taught junior high school and high school band and served as the District Band Coordinator; and the Fox Chapel Area School District in Pittsburgh, where he taught general music and 5th grade band. His education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Duquesne University, a master’s degree from VanderCook, and Master of Arts in educational technology from Concordia University. Schneider has conducted the IMEA junior and senior jazz ensembles and the Western Sun Conference Honor Band, and has presented clinic sessions at the Illinois Music Education Conference and the Illinois Percussive Arts Society in addition to VanderCook. He has authored review articles for the Music Educators Journal and Teaching Music. He has served in positions for the Fox Valley Music Festival, IMEA District IX, VanderCook’s Alumni Association Board and ARTSpeaks 204, and has been a panel member for the NAMM Foundation Music Achievement Council. He is a member of Phi Beta Mu, and the Vic Firth Education Team. He has received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence Award, and TeachHUB’s Making A Difference Award. 

Alex Kaminsky


Alexander Kaminsky was appointed Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at VanderCook College of Music in 2019 after a highly successful tenure at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. He holds degrees from the University of Florida and Indiana University, is active as an adjudicator, and is in demand as a guest conductor/clinician across the country. Throughout his 30-year career as a high school band director, Kaminsky’s ensembles have consistently earned Superior ratings at all levels of evaluation. In addition to earning Superior ratings at the FBA State Concert Band Assessment for an unprecedented 23 consecutive years (the last 13 of those years being with both his first and second bands), he is the only director in the history of the Florida Bandmasters Association to have had three concert bands from one school earn straight Superior ratings at State, which he achieved three times (2009, 2018 and 2019).
Kaminsky’s bands have performed at the Midwest Clinic (2005, 2009, 2014 and 2018), ABA Convention (2014), CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference (2004 and 2014), FMEA State Convention (2014), Music for All National Concert Band Festival (2002 and 2012), and the National Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall (2009 and 2018). In 2018, the Stoneman Douglas Wind Symphony was named a Mark of Excellence National Wind Band Honors winner as one of only 10 6A bands in the nation. His marching bands consistently placed in the Florida Marching Band State Championship Finals, twice winning consecutive FMBC State Championships (2013 and 2014, 2017 and 2018) as well as being named a finalist band at BOA regional competitions.
Kaminsky has presented his clinic “How Can I Get My Band to Sound Like That” at various conferences and workshops, and his annual “How To Fix It” series at the FMEA Convention has received high acclaim, with over 900 attendees in 2019. He has been awarded the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence numerous times and has been recognized with several achievement awards for education, including Florida’s 2019 FMEA Secondary Music Educator of the Year Award, FBA Oliver Hobbs Award, FBA Andrew J. Crew Award, National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teacher, Nobel Educator of Distinction, and Teacher of the Year. He is also listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Kaminsky is a Conn-Selmer Educational Clinician, an elected member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association and the American School Band Directors’ Association, and also holds memberships in CBDNA, NBA, NAfME and Phi Beta Mu. He has served on many state and national committees, and currently serves on the ABA Sousa/Ostwald Award Committee and the ABA School Bands Task Force. Kaminsky is a National Board Certified Teacher and has been featured in several periodicals including The Instrumentalist, Teaching Music, Halftime Magazine, School Band & Orchestra Magazine’s “50 Directors Who Make A Difference” and Home Magazine’s “12 Exceptional Educators.”

Dr. Carolyn Barber

Dr._Carolyn_BarberDr. Carolyn Barber is the Ron and Carol Cope Professor of Music and Director of Bands in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Glenn Korff School of Music. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in horn performance at Northwestern University, a Master of Music degree in horn performance from Yale University, and returned to Northwestern to earn her doctorate in conducting as a student of John P. Paynter and Victor Yampolsky. 
Dr. Barber began her career as a lecturer and assistant to the dean of the Northwestern University School of Music. Her duties included teaching advanced conducting and directing the university’s 118-piece Concert Band.  Prior to her appointment at UNL, Dr. Barber also served as the director of bands at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Apart from her conducting and teaching at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Dr. Barber also served for five years as the principal horn of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.
As director of bands at UNL, her teaching assignment is now a hybrid of traditional academic classes and performance-based courses. This combination provides a rich atmosphere for the cross-pollination of ideas, techniques and creative problem solving. Dr. Barber’s chief area of research is conducting practice and pedagogy, with emphasis on group dynamics (flocking and influence), and the development of ensembleship through improvisation, artistic thinking and a broad, multidisciplinary array of rehearsal techniques. She has demonstrated and elaborated upon her work at venues including the Midwest Clinic, conferences of the College Band Directors National Association, American String Teachers Association, and the National Association for Music Education, state music educators conventions, district training workshops, and masterclass/rehearsal clinics nationwide.
Dr. Barber has received numerous awards for musical and academic achievement, including the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Distinguished Teaching Award, a Hixson-Lied Professorship, two National Band Association Citations of Excellence, and a United States Navy Good Conduct Medal. Her writing has been published in the Journal of Band Research, and she is a regular contributor to the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band reference series. In addition to her scholarly activities, Dr. Barber maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor throughout the United States and Canada. She is a member of Phi Beta Mu Honorary Bandmasters Fraternity, state chair and a member of the College Band Directors National Association Research Committee, a peer reviewer for the Journal of the Conductors Guild, Nebraska Music Educators Association College/University Affairs chair, chair of the Nebraska Council for Music Teacher Education, and immediate past president of the Big Ten Band Directors Association.

Summer 2021 MECA courses officially begin on Monday, June 7. Soon after you register, be on the lookout for an email from Schoology with log-in instructions. Once you receive credentials, visit to login. On the morning of June 7, you'll have access to your classroom and course material.

Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.
