Developing Choirs:
Laying the Foundation

June 29–July 1, 2020
A three-day course for two graduate credits

In developing choirs, we must teach students to sing on pitch, harmonize, become musically literate, and grow into their adult voice. Over this three-day course, we explore each of these categories and discover ways to incorporate techniques and rehearsal ideas into our everyday routine, laying the foundation for strong choral performance.

Instructor: Cathy DeLanoy

DeLanoy,_Cathy_headshot_2020Catherine DeLanoy (MMEd '97) is a musician currently living in the suburbs of Chicago. She has taught music at every grade level in the public school system and recently retired after 23 years of teaching at Westmont Junior High School, where she taught general music and directed their four choirs. WJH choirs consistently earned top scores, honors and prestigious performances under her direction. She received her bachelor's degree in music education from Oakland University in Rochester, MI.
DeLanoy enjoyed arranging compositions for her choirs and continues to have her octavos and resource books published by Hal Leonard, Shawnee Press, Boosey & Hawkes, Bri-Lee Music and Carl Fischer. Her resource books include the best-selling Warming Up with Rounds, and more recently, 8 Steps to Harmonization.
DeLanoy has had the privilege of being the festival conductor at many ILMEA district festivals as well as other private festivals. She has taught several MECA courses at VanderCook, and also leads workshops as an elementary and middle school specialist. She continues to work as an instructor, clinician, conductor and adjudicator whenever possible.
