Learn how to create high-quality recordings of a wide variety of musical ensembles in this hands-on, project-based online course. You’ll learn appropriate microphone selection and placement, with consideration given to equipment and budget limitations. Live recording prep, editing, adding effects, mixing and mastering recordings for CD production and/or online distribution will be covered. Students will submit several audio projects as well as video journals demonstrating their understanding of course topics.

Students should be comfortably familiar with standard computer operation and functions, and have access to their own computer (either Mac or PC) with high-speed Internet access, micro- phones and other digital recording/interface equipment. Details will be discussed (including options for purchase or borrowing from a colleague if necessary) in the first week of the course.

William Miller joined the Community High School District 99 music faculty in 1995. He currently teaches a variety of courses at North High School, including: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Digital Music Composition, and Popular Music Styles (history). He is also the director of the DGN Jazz Lab Band and lead-director of the Trojan Marching Band.  Mr. Miller also serves as the auditorium manager and has been the lighting and sound director of several productions each year during his tenure at North.

Mr. Miller received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There he participated in concert bands, jazz bands and was a four year member of the Marching Illini.  Mr. Miller has also served on the staff of the Illinois Summer Youth Music Camp.  Mr. Miller has presented clinics on the use of music technology in the public schools at several national conferences including the Midwest Clinic, the Michigan Music Technology Conference and the Illinois Music Educators Association.  He has also taught courses on this subject at the VanderCook College of Music and Elmhurst College.

In 2012, Mr. Miller achieved National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
