Recital Highlights

Get ready to roll-up your sleeves and be immersed into both music and educational technology tools! Whether you are a general music, band, orchestra or chorus teacher, you'll learn innovative ways to reach your students as you become more knowledgeable and proficient with a variety of applications. Topics and projects include website creation with Weebly, Google Forms & Sheets, GarageBand, SMART Board applications, SAMR, Noteflight, live sound reinforcement, Animoto, YouTube, blended classroom tools, apps, online resources and more!

Ozsvath,_Keith_headshot_2013Keith Ozsvath is passionate about teaching music, integrating technology, and professional development. He joined the music faculty at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia, Illinois in 2000 and continues to team teach concert band and direct the Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Ozsvath is an active adjudicator and clinician in the Chicago area. He is a member of the American School Band Directors Association, been recognized twice by “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” and is an Eagle Scout. He has been an Illinois Summer Youth Music conductor at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. Additionally, he has presented sessions at the National Middle School Association Conference, Illinois Music Educators All-State Conference, and at VanderCook College of Music. Keith is a self-professed techie and his blog, Teaching Band & More, provides practical teaching ideas for music educators. He has conducted numerous professional development classes for fellow educators on educational technology, including podcasting, blogging, web 2.0 tools and using social media as a professional development tool. He serves as an advisor and moderator for the 10,000+ member Band Director Group on Facebook.

Hatfield,_Lisa_headshot_2012Lisa Hatfield is currently in her second year as the 5th grade band teacher for all six elementary schools in Batavia, IL.  Prior to this position, she team-taught the 6-8th grade bands at Batavia’s Rotolo Middle School for 6 years.  Lisa graduated with honors from VanderCook College of Music in 2006, and also earned her Master’s in Educational and Instructional Technology from Northern Illinois University in 2011.  Lisa has presented at numerous conferences including NMSA and IMEA, VCM MECA, and most recently was a featured panelist for the 2012 NAMM Midwest Band & Orchestra Webinar.  Lisa currently resides in Aurora with her husband, David.

Rank,_William_headshotMr. William Rank is finishing his ninth year as Band Director at Oak Prairie JHS, which services parts of Lockport, Lemont, and Homer Glen.  Mr. Rank conducts the Oak Prairie Symphonic Band, Concert Band and two jazz ensembles.  He also teaches semester general music classes in Music Technology.  Prior to teaching at Oak Prairie, Mr. Rank taught four years at Scullen Middle School in Naperville, and two years as an assistant at Champaign Central High School in Champaign. Mr. Rank’s ensembles have consistently received excellent ratings at local and state festivals.  In 2011 the Oak Prairie Jazz Band 1 performed at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conference.  The following December, the Oak Prairie Jazz Band 1 assisted Jose Diaz, J. Richard Dunscomb and Tony Garcia as a rehearsal lab band at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.  Mr. Rank received Bachelors and Masters degrees in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He recently was awarded the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award and is currently on the leadership committee for the Illinois Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (ILcmp) Project.  

Blair,_Abigail_headshotAbigail S. Blair is the K-5 music teacher at Westmoor School in Northbrook, IL. Her education includes an undergraduate degree in Music Education (Augustana College), a Masters in Music Education (Boston University), and Orff certification (DePaul University). In addition, Abby has also taken composition and production courses from Berklee College of Music, and has been trained by national Apple Education Specialists. She has presented at locally at universities and school districts on interactive classrooms, arts collaboration, and musical production, and is also the creator and author of Beat Blocks™ products and lessons.

Finch,_Kathryn_headshotKathryn E. Finch is currently a K-5 music teacher at Meadowbrook School in Northbrook, IL.  She holds an undergraduate degree in Music Education (Augustana College), a Masters in Music Education (VanderCook College of Music) and she is certified in all 3 levels of Orff Schulwerk (VanderCook College of Music). This school year Kathryn had the privilege to work with an Apple trainer, presented at the Illinois State Music Education Conference in Peoria, IL and served as a technology mentor in her district as well.  Over the years, Kathryn has taught a variety of courses on integrating technology in the music classroom.

palese_rick_retouchRick Palese joined the administrative team at VanderCook in July 2010, however his relationship with the institution goes back much further. Rick is a VanderCook alumnus, having earned his B.M.Ed. in 2003, and M.M.Ed. in 2008. Prior to being hired at VanderCook, Rick taught for seven years at Prairie Hill School in Cary, IL, where he directed both 5th and 6th grade bands. While at Prairie Hill, Rick also sponsored Jazz Club, Podcasting Club, and assisted with 6th grade musical productions and school assemblies. Rick is an avid percussionist and maintains an active teaching studio at Absolute Music in Geneva, IL. He is a member of the Hudson Music Teacher Integration Project, and Vic Firth Education Team.

A $75 deposit is required at time of registration. Tuition balance is due in full by the first day of class.
