Alumni Back to Visit

VanderCook College of music will host nearly one hundred clinics at the college from now until the beginning of June. Bands, choirs, and orchestras from around the nation and Canada will stop in for a dose of VanderCook hospitality and to work with our amazing faculty.  Most recently, two alums, Korey Coffer (B’04) and Brandon Crawford (B’05) made a trip back to allow their students to experience a little of that VanderCook magic they so proudly remember.

Korey Coffer and his Harvard High School Band enjoyed a great day in Chicago with a clinic followed by Chicago-style pizza. This group of 28 were working up some pieces to prepare for a spring festival.  But for Coffer, the visit was just as much about having his students work with his former band director, Dr. Charles T. Menghini.

The story is a little different with alumnus, Brandon Crawford.  Crawford was a vocal major in college, who after 9 years of teaching choir, was now asked by his administrators at Princeton High School to teach band.  Crawford’s VanderCook training allowed him the versatility to accept this new responsibility.  He quickly reached out to his classmates for instrumental advice, but it was his choral skills that brought on incredible results for his band.  His choral like conducting and phrasing lifted the level of musicality in the ensemble to a whole new level.

Both Crawford and Coffer plan to return again for another clinic, but they won’t have to wait long for some more VanderCook interaction.  Woodwinds professor, Ruth Rhodes has visited Harvard and both band director and president of the college, Dr. Menghini and choir director, Dr. Sinclair, will be up later this month to visit Princeton.
