Lewis & Gerry Schmidt Instrumental Music Education Scholarship

This $500 annual award is given to an aspiring band director who exhibits financial need and is applied toward tuition and fees. Preference for this scholarship is given to students from the state of Wisconsin. 

Lewis Schmidt received his MMEd from VanderCook in 1963. He taught music in Wisconsin schools for 41 years until he retired in 1998. Schmidt spent 25 years of his career in the public school system, the last 16 of which were as head of the department and high school band director at River Valley High School in Spring Green, WI. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by VanderCook in 1992.

He spent the following 16 years as chairman of the creative arts division, associate professor of music education and band director at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, WI. Schmidt served as a consultant and adjudicator for the Wisconsin School Music Association and conducted the Kiel Municipal Band from 1984 until his passing in 2016. He was on the VanderCook alumni board and served as president. Schmidt also served as Chairman of the VanderCook Board of Trustees until his passing in November 2016.
