Herman D. Smith was an alumnus of VanderCook College of Music who earned his Master of Music Education degree in 1973. Smith was passionate about the pursuit of music education, just like the VanderCook students who are earning their music education degrees today. He was a frequent donor to several VanderCook scholarships, and his contributions to the school will be remembered forever.

When Smith passed away, his wife, Doris Smith, decided to continue his legacy and honor his memory by starting the Herman D. Smith Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to an African-American student with a special interest in teaching within the Chicago Public Schools district. Recipients are selected by VanderCook faculty, and the award is renewable for four years.
