Summer Strings Camp

July 29 - August 9, 2019

Young string players are invited to this two-week string camp to see first-hand how music education makes a difference in the lives of children in our area!

Now in its second year, Summer Strings Camp is modeled after Nat King Cole Generation Hope's highly successful eight-year program in Boca Raton, FL, and will host up to 100 string and guitar students from Title 1 Chicago Public Schools for two weeks on VanderCook's campus.

This life-changing experience will provide middle and high school students an opportunity to receive the highest quality instruction from VanderCook upperclassmen and a Guitars Over Guns program representative serving as mentors. In addition, VanderCook’s American String Teachers Association Chapter is on board as well as artist faculty and other leading artists for coaching.

Students will receive individual, small group and large ensemble instruction and will follow a rigorous schedule of rehearsals, coaching and master classes. Curriculum incorporates the education plans of the school district and university in a cohesive mix that provides an innovative learning environment that propels students to engage with their mentors, become more passionate about their musical abilities and achieve a higher level of character and leadership excellence. The camp will also provide pre-service music teacher training for junior and senior VanderCook students.

Summer Strings culminates in a free concert on the final Friday which will be attended by parents, friends, donors and is open to the community as well.

Summer Strings is supported by MBRE, The Steward Foundation, and The Mark Cuban Foundation.
