WGI Sport of the Arts is the world’s premiere organization producing indoor color guard, percussion, and winds competitions.  As a non-profit youth organization, WGI also serves as the governing body for the indoor color guard, percussion, and winds activities.

WGI is proud to continue its partnership with VanderCook College of Music to offer graduate credit for attending WGIcon this coming September. Through the Continuing Education program, teachers may earn credit for attending the convention sessions and completing the necessary coursework that follows. The university offers the course as a retrospective, which allows teachers to register for the credit even after attending the professional development event.

Student Engagement

Coursework will consist of a variety of observations and/or participation in WGIcon sessions.  These experiences are to be summarized in written (typed) outline form, and reported in reflections essays.  These reports will be submitted for assessment within 2 weeks of the conclusion of participation in WGIcon.  Participants will receive access to Schoology (VCM Online Course Platform) where all course assignments will be outlined. Uploads, course submissions, and instructor feedback will all be through Schoology. 

Course Description

WGIcon is the ultimate educational event for all instructors, designers, technicians, and administrators of Percussion, Winds, and Color Guard groups around the globe!  Featuring motivational speakers and a wide array of professional development sessions, WGIcon offers you the chance to hear from leading educators, designers, and technicians on how they make their magic. 

VanderCook College of Music offers participants an opportunity to earn 1 Graduate Credit (one semester hour) by attending clinic sessions followed by the submission of observation summary outlines and reflection essays.  (total course engagement time is 12.5 hours)

* Participants will be required to compile 6 session reports. 

Each session report will include:

  • Participants are to upload scans of handouts, concert programs, or share session links to Schoology (VCM On-Line learning platform) for each session. 
  • Participants are to develop written summary outlines of each session.
  • Participants are to write personal reflection essay reports (2-3 pages) of each session. 

All required course material must be completed and submitted by October 8, 2024.

Joe Koppel

MECA Coordinator

Joe Koppel serves as the Coordinator of MECA (Music Education Center for America) Continuing Education program at VanderCook College of Music.  Joe is a proud alumnus of VanderCook College of Music, graduating with his Masters Degree in Music Education in 2001.  Joe earned his Type 75 Administrative Certification from North Central College in 2008. 

Joe Koppel has been the Director of Bands at Jackson Middle School in Villa Park since 1998, teaching grades 4-8.  He directs the Jackson Area Preparatory and Intermediate Bands, the Jackson Concert and Symphonic Bands, and the Jackson Jazz Lab.  Under his direction, the Jackson Symphonic Band has consistently earned Division I ratings at District and State Level Contests.  In 2012 the Jackson Symphonic Band was chosen to perform at the prestigious University of Illinois SuperState Band Festival and in 2015 was designated ‘Honors’ Status at IGSMA State Festival.

Joe was chosen by his peers in 2023 as a Quinlan and Fabish Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator (COMEA).  In addition, Joe earned the Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for outstanding service to the Illinois Grade School Music Association in 2023.  He currently serves as the IGSMA District VII CoChair and the ILMEA District 9 Jr. Band Representative.
