Course Description

This course is designed for music educators seeking to create inclusive and effective learning environments for English Language Learners (ELLs). Using Spanish for Music Teachers as the primary text, participants will explore strategies for teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students, with a focus on practical applications in the music classroom. Topics include ELL best practices, bilingual communication, repertoire selection, and fostering positive learning environments. Participants will engage in hands-on activities, discussions, and reflections to develop tools for supporting ELLs while maintaining high-quality music instruction. Guest lectures from co-author Heidi Nelson and ELL teacher Katherine Portillia will provide additional insights. This course is ideal for educators who want to expand their teaching strategies to better serve diverse student populations.

Jacob Prosek

Jacob Prosek is a general music teacher and choir conductor in Lombard, Illinois. He holds a Master’s Degree in Music Education from VanderCook College of Music, where he received certification in all three levels of Orff Schulwerk training. Prosek holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from North Central College, where he was named Outstanding Major in Music Education and received a Richter Grant for research.

His scholarship includes co-authoring the book Spanish for Music Teachers (GIA Publications, 2019) and articles in Teaching Music magazine and the Music Educators Journal. Jacob’s work is informed by extensive international experience, including field research in Germany and collaborations with educators across Europe, North America, and South America.

A frequent guest lecturer, he provides professional development for school districts and universities. Jacob is also an in-demand clinician, leading workshops for students on diverse topics ranging from harmonica performance to global folk dances.
