Overview
Dr. Scott Edgar wrote Music Education and Social Emotional Learning: The Heart of Teaching Music (2017) to better prepare music educators to engage their students musically, socially and emotionally. In this course, Dr. Edgar reflects on individual classroom contexts, learning about SEL, and examines techniques to enrich the music classroom. Modules include:
- What is SEL?
- Socialization in the Music Classroom
- Self-Awareness in the Music Classroom
- Relationships in the Music Classroom
- Responsible Decision-Making
Outcomes:
- A broad understanding of SEL as a construct
- An understanding of how music classrooms facilitate a social web of relationships
- The ability to draw connections between music curricula and SEL curricula
- The ability to make inferences for individual classrooms at all levels and areas (K-12 general, band, choir, orchestra)
