Students will examine in depth the major traditional music education methods (e.g. Suzuki, Dalcroze, Orff, Kodály, MLT) as well as more contemporary methods (e.g. Informal learning, Modern Band, El Sistema, Musical Futures) from cultural, philosophical and psychological viewpoints. The aim will be to develop or revise curricula, lessons, and practices in order to be more relevant and applicable to teachers and students alike. Assignments will incorporate both the wealth of knowledge from successful traditional practice as well as contemporary research and innovations. Topics will include the methods listed above as well as culturally responsive teaching, standards-based instruction, understanding Universal Design for Learning, music literacy and performance practice. The topics and assignments will be flexible enough to allow students to explore personal and professional areas of interest in order to have applicable use in practice.
