Overview

Children’s Literature and Poems in the Music Classroom will focus on the music concepts and skills that can be found in the many familiar and favorite stories and rhymes found in music classrooms. The course will address the variety of ways these selections can be introduced and used to address concepts and skills that meet assessable standards.

Although the course may be completed asynchronously, teachers can certainly join weekly chats on Tues afternoons at 8:00 PM EST / 5 PM PST - these chats - along with the course recordings - will be available through Schoology on a weekly basis as the course progresses.

None.

Required Text(s)

Participants must have access to a collection of children’s literature and poetry selections (classroom collections, school library, public library, etc).

The evening  before your class begins, be on the lookout for an email from Schoology with log-in instructions. Once you receive credentials, visit www.online.vandercook.edu to login.

You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.

Instructor

Thom Borden

Thom Borden has a Bachelor of Science degree in music education and a master’s degree in education with a concentration in curriculum and instruction focused in reading. He completed Kodály training and certification through CSU with Sr. Lorna Zemke, and Orff Levels at UNLV and an Orff Master Level at the University of Memphis under Jos Wytac. Advanced studies include music and movement in Paris. He is the president of the Las Vegas Urban Chapter of Kodály Educators and a past-president of the Greater Chicago Orff Chapter. Borden has presented at numerous AOSA and OAKE Conferences, and at Orff and Kodály chapters across the United States every year. He has also presented in Australia, Canada and China. Currently teaching PreK-5 in Las Vegas, Borden served as vice president of the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association, and was previously the chair of the AOSA Diversity Committee Chair. Borden has published Orff arrangements in the McGraw-Hill series Spotlight on Music and Music Studio, and has published materials on using manipulatives in the music classroom and using children’s literature to address music concepts and skills.
