BCSN recognizes Kathleen McGrady as January Teacher of the Month

Congratulations to BCSN's  January Teacher of the Month, Kathleen McGrady of Springfield High School! Ms. McGrady is the symphonic band director and has been making music with her students for over thirty years.


Kathleen McGrady is presently in her 15th year of teaching instrumental music with the Springfield Local Schools in Holland, Ohio where she is responsible for instructing the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands, the “Blue Devil” Marching Band, and the High School Symphonic Band.  Previous to her appointment as Director of Bands at Springfield, Ms. McGrady taught band in Northwood Local School District for 17 years, where she was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1996. Ms. McGrady  is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and holds a Masters Degree in Music Education from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois.

An avid participant in OMEA competition, her high school and middle school bands consistently earn superior ratings at District and State adjudicated events. Additionally, she has served OMEA in many capacities, including District President, State Secretary, Co-Chair of Performances for the 2007 State Conference, Band Chair for the 2012 State Conference and Co-Chair for the District 1 Honors Music Festival. Ms. McGrady is frequently requested to adjudicate at solo and ensemble and large group festivals and has participated on the selection committee for Junior High Band Literature.  She currently serves on the Bowling Green State University Alumni Band Board.

Among her various honors, Ms. McGrady has been a receipient of Springfield High School’s “You Made A Difference Award”  and was one of  ten Band Directors from the United States selected to be on Staff for the All-American Marching Band that performed for the Grand Opening of the new EuroDisney Park in Paris, France. She was privileged this past June to be selected as the Grand Marshall of the 76th Annual Strawberry Festival Parade for the village of Holland, home of Springfield Local Schools.

In addition to her position as Guest Conductor at the College of Wooster Music Camp each summer, she maintains an active schedule throughout the year as a Guest Conductor/Clinician.  She is also on staff with the Ohio Ambassadors of Music, which performs throughout Europe every other summer, and will again be traveling to seven countries for their 2013 European Tour.

Ms. McGrady maintains professional affiliations with the National Association for Music Education, Ohio Music Education Association, National Band Association, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, is a lifetime member of  Tau Beta Sigma and currently serves as the Ohio State Chair for the American School Band Directors’ Association.

Also active as a performing saxophonist, she currently is listed in the 24th edition of Who’s Who of American Women (2004-2005), in the 2005-2006 Edition ofWho’s Who of American Teachers, and in the 2006 edition of the National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers and is also a member of the International Bandmasters Fraternity – Phi Beta Mu.
