            Shanae D. Kemp is from Nassau, Bahamas where she has been involved with music all of her life. Shanae is currently a junior vocal major at VanderCook College of Music pursuing a bachelor of music education degree. Influenced by her family and band director (VanderCook alumni) Ms. Elizabeth A. Thornton, music has always been a passion of hers from a young age. After graduation, Shanae aspires to perform and teach all over the world.

Program Notes

 “I Will Be Earth”by Gwyneth Walker is a musical setting of a love poem written by American poet, May Swenson. This piece is intended to present the poem in a simple and straightforward manner, which also portrays the beauty, passion, and humor in the text.  The lyricist May Swenson was born in Logan, Utah in 1913 and died in 1989. She worked mainly as a poet publishing over 450 poems but she spent most of her life in Greenwich Village, New York City, as a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. The composer Dr. Gwyneth Walker was born in 1947. She graduated from Brown University and the Hartt School of Music with B.A., M.M. and D.M.A. Degrees in Music Composition. She was also a former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory but later on resigned from academic employment in 1982 in order to pursue a career as a full-time composer.
