About VanderCook College of Music

VanderCook College of Music has its origins in 1909 and is an independent, private, not-for-profit, fully accredited institution. VanderCook is the only college in the nation solely devoted to music education, and offers the Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music Education degrees. In 2009, VanderCook was selected as one of the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Great Colleges to Work For program. The college is located three miles south of the loop on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology at 3140 South Federal Street, Chicago, IL 60616.

Instructor or Assistant Professor
Director of String Music Education

 

VanderCook College of Music seeks a highly motivated music educator to build a developing string music education program at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The ideal candidate is able to provide a high-quality performance experience for students majoring on an orchestral instrument while providing all music education students with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of string pedagogy.  This is a full-time position (fall, spring and summer session) to begin August, 2021.
 

Responsibilities

1.     Build and oversee an outstanding string music education program at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Current ensembles include the Philharmonic Orchestra and String Ensemble.
2.     Teach coursework in string music education.
3.     Observe student teachers, primarily in string areas.
4.     Actively develop relationships with area music education programs.
5.     Assist in recruiting students to VanderCook’s BMEd and MMEd string music education programs.
6.     Develop continuing education courses in string education for current music educators.
7.     Develop a beginning string education program for neighborhood children in collaboration with our One
City community music program.
8.     Work collaboratively and imaginatively with other members of the college’s community to support
VanderCook’s mission of preparing highly qualified music teacher educators.
 

Qualifications

1.     An innovative, imaginative spirit that seeks to help future music educators develop the skills needed to 
be effective music educators in 21st century schools.
2.     Experienced, successful leadership as a college or high school orchestra director.
3.     Expertise in orchestral literature, conducting, and string music education pedagogy.
4.     Energy and ability to motivate student musicians to achieve their highest level of musicianship.
5.     Excellent organizational, administrative and interpersonal skills.
6.     A doctorate is preferred. Candidates with a master’s degree and significant professional experience will
be considered.
