March 26
Audition & Visit Day at VanderCook – 34 prospective students visited campus yesterday to audition and learn about the school and the value of a VanderCook education. A special shout-out to the Admissions Team and all the students, faculty and staff who helped our visitors feel welcome!

Dr. Robert Sinclair will guest-conduct at Colony High School in Palmer, AK, at the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District Honor Festival.

March 15-17
Undergrads Melissa Anderson, Amanda Armstrong, Dante Del Grosso, Lyric Hempler, Rachel Lisowski, Marco Uriegas and Korben Wilson attended the Music for All (MFA) National Festival in Indianapolis, IN. They worked throughout the event setting up rehearsal rooms and performance venues and helping out at the MFA headquarters. Anderson, Del Grosso, Wilson and Lisowski also had the privilege to play concert chimes with the National Honor Band on their final selection, James M. Stephenson’s “There Are No Words.”

Dr. Robert Sinclair gave two presentations at the North Dakota Music Educators Association Conference: “Teaching for Transfer – Making Every Moment Count” and “Score to Performance: The Science of Musicality.”

March 23
Dr. Roseanne Rosenthaland Lauren Ryals (MMEd ’15) presented "Cultivating Musical Expressivity in Beginning Instrumentalists" at the NAfME National Conference.

March 23-24
Manju Durairaj (MMEd ’03) gave two presentations at the Organization of American Kodály Educators Conference in Oklahoma City: “Dance Around the World” (sponsored by Hal Leonard) and “Enriching Classroom Music Culture Through Active Music Making Approaches” (co-presented with Julie Scott and Aileen Miracle).

March 25
VanderCook runners were in full force for the Bank of America 8K Shamrock Shuffle. Undergrads Kevin Boyle and Joshua Breen, CFO Michelle Anderson and her sister Erica raised over $700 for the Share Your Passion campaign. This marked Michelle’s second Shuffle for VanderCook, and the first for her sister. Not to be outdone, Josh Breen finished the race in an impressive 41 minutes. Thank you, Team VanderCook!

The vocal ensemble Musicality, led by alumnus Michael Gibson (BMEd ’05), recently filmed a video at VanderCook covering “Rewrite the Stars” from the film The Greatest Showman.

Dr. Michael Hall’s viola accompaniment was cited in Gramophone’s review of Mara Gibson’s CD Sky-Born.

Upcoming

April 7
The 15th annual A Night at the Pops! benefit concert takes place at 3125 South Federal Street, the site of VanderCook’s future performance hall, starting at 6:00 p.m.  Tickets are still available but going fast!

May 8
Dr. Ruti Abramovitch will perform a special chamber music concert at VanderCook. Joining her will be CSO principal cellist John Sharp and Lyric Opera violinist Liba Schacht. The concert starts at 7:00 p.m. and admission is free!

May 13
The VanderCook Percussion Ensemble, led by Prof. Jim Yakas, will perform a special concert at the famed Herbert House in Evanston, IL, as part of the series “Hear the Beats in the Herbert House,” hosted by the School of Architecture at Taliesin.

May 17-19
Dr. Michael Hall will be performing at the New Music Gathering conference at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

Master drummer Billy Cobham brings his Crosswinds Project to SPACE in Evanston for two shows at 7:00 and 9:30.

Indie rock legends Yo La Tengo perform two shows at Thalia Hall in Pilsen.

Kent Nagano conducts the CSO for a program of Leonard Bernstein, Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner.

Shemekia Copeland performs at SPACE in Evanston.
