Student Conductors Shine at Conducting Debut Concert
April 28, 2014 04:15 PM
35 VanderCook students took to the podium to conduct their peers at an afternoon and evening concert on Sunday, April 27. The conductors lead an ensemble in their primary discipline including the Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, and Philharmonic Orchestra. Each conductor is currently enrolled in Advanced Conducting and Methods of Teaching II where they learn to organize all aspects of planning and executing a concert. Junior, Jake Koulouris, admits that there is much more involved to pulling off an event like this then he had originally thought. The class handles everything from promotions, concert programs, and set ups, to sending thank you notes to all who were involved in helping with the event. All conductors also get ample time to rehearse their pieces at the regularly scheduled ensemble time. Student conductors work with the ensembles for 15 minute increments and are critiqued by ensemble directors and conducting instructors.
