Standards-Based Learning, Grading & Reporting in the Music Classroom

This course is designed for K-12 music educators who are new to standards-based learning, grading, and reporting. This course is also applicable to music educators who have some experience with this topic, and are ready to take a deeper dive into improving their practice with standards-based learning, grading and reporting.

We will take a ground-up approach, building our understanding and proficiency with standards-based learning from a philosophical and practical approach. Students will use their real world experience and curriculum to apply the concepts presented in this class, giving them actionable skills — developing reporting standards, crafting learning targets, designing rubrics that fit in different situations, and more — for shifting their teaching and their students’ learning.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Utilize online professional resources to further learning in implementing standards-based grading

  • Develop reporting standards that reflect student learning.

  • Create meaningful learning targets to guide student learning.

  • Design rubrics that provide useful feedback for student progress toward learning targets.

  • Integrate standards-based grading principles into their daily practice.

Instructor: Greg Scapillato

Greg_ScapillatoA native Chicagoan, Greg Scapillato currently serves as a member of the music faculty at Northbrook District 28 (IL), recently designated as a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. He conducts the wind ensemble and 6th grade jazz band, along with teaching band lessons for grades 4-8. The Northbrook Junior High (NBJH) Wind Ensemble, under Scapillato’s direction, has benefitted from meaningful performance opportunities, including joint concerts with other middle school bands, service-based performances such as Veterans’ Day ceremonies, and sharing the stage with outstanding community and brass bands. Scapillato initiated the biannual NBJH Bands Alumni Concert to connect current NBJH band students to the lifelong love of music performance. The most recent alumni concert hosted graduates from across a 40+-year span.
 
In addition to his music-related pursuits, Scapillato actively hones his technology “chops," especially pertaining to the classroom. He is proud to have been a specialist with Apple for several years, making new technology accessible to individuals with a wide range of expertise. He regularly serves on various District 28 committees and initiatives related to technology integration in the classroom. Scapillato has also spearheaded the technology and logistics rollout for live-streaming HD video of District 28’s music events, as well as managing the editing, broadcast and archiving of performance footage.
 
Scapillato holds degrees from St. Norbert College, Western Illinois University, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with additional graduate coursework through VanderCook College of Music. He is a member of Illinois Music Educators’ Association, National Association for Music Education, and the National Band Association. Scapillato is a founder and coordinator of the Music for All Middle School Concert Band Camp, part of the Music for All Summer Symposium held on the campus of Ball State University. He previously served Music for All as a member and coordinator of the SWAG Team, and as a full-time staff member.

VanderCook Online is powered by Schoology (www.schoology.com). Through this learning management system, you'll be able to interact directly with your instructor, students in your classes, and members of the greater VanderCook Online community.

The summer online term officially begins on Monday, June 10. The week prior to June 10, you'll be added as a new Schoology user. Be on the lookout for an email from noreply@schoology.com or wfong@vandercook.edu with log-in instructions. Once you are given credentials, simply visit www.online.vandercook.edu to login. On the morning of June 10, you'll have access to your classroom and course material.

Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.

You’ll have the opportunity to work at your own pace each week while completing assignments and posting responses to discussion questions. You’ll constantly be interacting with your instructor and classmates online, and working through new material each week. We know how crazy summer schedules can get, so our instructors try to make everything as flexible as possible!
