Zero to Jazz is a week of interactive and engaging activities designed to elevate any jazz program from beginning to advanced. Filled with free resources from shedthemusic.com, participants will work on style, chord changes, rhythm section fundamentals, jazz language acquisition, transcription, ear training, repertoire selection and rehearsal strategies. Methods presented in class will be applied to small and large ensembles with opportunities to play, teach and write. At the end of the week, learners will feel confident directing as well as playing in a variety of jazz ensembles. Required materials for the course include a computer and your primary instrument.

Instructors: Bob Habersat & Paul Levy

Both Bob Habersat and Paul Levy teach music at Oak Lawn Community High School in the Chicago suburbs. Habersat is a jobbing guitar player and has a degree in music education from Elmhurst College, and Levy is a gigging saxophonist holding degrees from Ohio State University, DePaul University, and VanderCook College of Music. They created the free education website shedthemusic.com, which specializes in remediation and enrichment content for the general music and performance classrooms. With concise videos, clear text explanations and integrations with Noteflgiht and Soundtrap, they have produced new ways to teach music theory, jazz, and music technology using 1:1 technology. Their work has been highlighted in Soundtrap’s EDU blog, Noteflight’s EDU blog, the NAfME professional development portal, and the JEN newsletter, among others. Habersat and Levy have presented their methods at the JEN conference, Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, NAfME’s National Inservice, and IMEC. When they are not teaching or playing, Paul spends his time rummaging through record bins and spending time with his family while Bob loves exploring the outdoors with his wife and their children.
