Have you ever wanted to find out more about portfolio assessment or create innovative digital portfolios to help students demonstrate the connections between the curriculum, instruction, and assessment? Do you already have a portfolio project that you want to convert into a digital portfolio? 21st Century music teachers should consider how a student portfolio demonstrates student growth and a continuum of learning, and it’s easy!  Research shows that a high level of autonomy occurs when students are given the opportunity to reflect on their learning and mastery. Using a blend of free technology tools (such as Google Apps, Recap, etc.) and traditional portfolio assessment methods, this course aids teachers with researching and developing music portfolios that meet the needs of their K-12 instrumental choral and music classes. Participants will complete weekly assignments that ultimately progress into an effective portfolio that addresses specific learning outcomes.

Glen Schneider is a faculty member at Metea Valley High School in Aurora, Illinois, where he teaches band. He also directs the Metea Valley Symphony Orchestra, Marching Mustangs, Pep Band, MV Jazz Orchestra, and serves as the music department faculty PLC Leader. Mr. Schneider previously taught band at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, IL, the Oswego Community School District 308 in Oswego, IL where he taught Junior High School and High School Band and served as the District Band Coordinator, and the Fox Chapel Area School District in Pittsburgh, PA, where he taught General Music and 5th Grade Band. His education includes a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Duquesne University, Master of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music, and Master of Arts in Educational Technology, from Concordia University. Mr. Schneider has conducted the IMEA Junior and Senior jazz ensembles, the Western Sun Conference Honor Band, and has presented clinic sessions at the Illinois Music Education Conference, Illinois Percussive Arts Society, VanderCook College of Music, and has authored review articles for the Music Educator’s Journal and Teaching Music. He has served in positions for the Fox Valley Music Festival, IMEA District IX, VanderCook College Alumni Board, ARTSpeaks 204, and has been a panel member for the NAMM Foundation Music Achievement Council. He is a member of Phi Beta Mu, and the Vic Firth Education Team. He has received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence Award, and the TeachHUB "Making A Difference" Award.

VanderCook Online is powered by Schoology (www.schoology.com). Through this learning management system, you'll be able to interact directly with your instructor, students in your classes, and members of the greater VanderCook Online community.

The summer online term officially begins on Monday, June 12. The week prior to June 12, you'll be added as a new Schoology user. Be on the lookout for an email from noreply@schoology.com or wfong@vandercook.edu with log-in instructions. Once you are given credentials, simply visit www.online.vandercook.edu to login. On the morning of June 12, you'll have access to your classroom and course material.

Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.

You’ll have the opportunity to work at your own pace each week while completing assignments and posting responses to discussion questions. You’ll constantly be interacting with your instructor and classmates online, and working through new material each week. We know how crazy summer schedules can get, so our instructors try to make everything as flexible as possible!
