Filming, editing and sharing videos with iMovie is an easy user-friendly way to expand teaching in your classroom. This beginner-level course takes you through iMovie basics step-by-step, covering filming, editing and sharing online. Through detailed tutorials, topic-specific projects, peer-to-peer project reviews and relevant discussion topics, you’ll walk away with practical understanding of iMovie’s possibilities, ready to immediately employ them in your classroom. Course takeaways include techniques for authentic assessments, formative assessments, the “flipped classroom,” instructional tutorials and much more.
Required Materials: iMovie for Mac, and a device with video-recording capabilities (smartphone, tablet, DSLR camera or camcorder). This course does not cover iMovie for iOS.
Instructor: Patrick Benson
Patrick Benson joined the administrative team at VanderCook College of Music in July 2015 as the Director of Continuing and Online Education and also teaches Technology in Music education at the undergraduate level. Patrick earned his B.M.Ed. from VanderCook in 2008, and is currently working on his Master of Arts in Applied Professional Studies at the School for New Learning at DePaul University.
Patrick returns to his alma mater having taught for seven years at Hubbard High School in Chicago, where he was the director of high school bands. While at Hubbard, Patrick led the marching band, jazz band and pep band. He was also the audio/visual coordinator, as well as the school activity director and a local school council representative.
In addition to teaching and working at VanderCook, Patrick is an active percussionist in the Chicagoland area, and currently serves as assistant director of the Lakeside Pride Jazz Orchestra.

VanderCook Online is powered by Schoology (www.schoology.com). Through this learning management system, you'll be able to interact directly with your instructor, students in your classes, and members of the greater VanderCook Online community.
The summer online term officially begins on Monday, June 12. The week prior to June 12, you'll be added as a new Schoology user. Be on the lookout for an email from email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org with log-in instructions. Once you are given credentials, simply visit www.online.vandercook.edu to login. On the morning of June 12, you'll have access to your classroom and course material.
Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.
You’ll have the opportunity to work at your own pace each week while completing assignments and posting responses to discussion questions. You’ll constantly be interacting with your instructor and classmates online, and working through new material each week. We know how crazy summer schedules can get, so our instructors try to make everything as flexible as possible!
