Band Director Academy

Band Director Academy (BDA) is a multi-day professional development workshop for band directors. BDA will be held Friday, June 24 – Monday, June 27, 2016 at New York City’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center and led by JALC Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis. Additional faculty will include members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and other prominent jazz educators. We focus on the essentials of teaching jazz, emphasizing hands-on learning and practical techniques.

For more than twenty years, Jazz at Lincoln Centers “Essentially Ellington” program has been a popular aspect of many school jazz programs. This year, Wynton Marsalis leads directors into a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the music of Duke Ellington and his place in American culture. Whether you are a seasoned “EE veteran” or fresh out of school, teaching in a fully fledged program or just starting out, urban, suburban, rural or somewhere in between, playing Ellington’s music will enrich the lives of your students and community. We believe in a practical, literature based, hands on approach that is informed by the aesthetic choices made by our greatest composers, arrangers and practitioners of Americas music; jazz.

The four-day session includes individual classes on the Ellington brass, reed, and rhythm section led by members for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. By utilizing listening, demonstration, discussion, and then practical application, attendees will gain an insight into how to transfer these specific techniques to their band room.
