Recital Highlights

Immerse yourself in a foundation of knowledge related to successfully teaching children with autism in music classrooms. Specific topics covered in this class include strategies that facilitate participation, music skill development, and enjoyment for children on the autism spectrum. In addition, challenges related specifically to sensory, behavioral and social challenges that can impede positive inclusion experiences are explored.

Instructor: Dr. Elizabeth Chappell

Chappell,_Elizabeth_headshot_2013Dr. Elizabeth Chappell holds degrees in both Music Therapy (University of Kansas) and Music Education (University of Texas at Austin). She has taught orchestra for over 15 years in the Austin Independent School District and just recently has earned a National Board Teacher Certification. She has presented sessions about her experiences teaching students with autism at the conferences of the American String Teachers Association, American Music Therapy Association, Texas Music Educator Association and the Center for Educator Development in the Fine Arts. She has contributed to articles about inclusion and autism that have appeared in the Journal of Research in Music Education and the Journal of Music Therapy.
