Recital Highlights

The Art of Wind Band Teaching and Conducting Course will focus on issues that instrumental music educators at all levels of education face on a daily basis, including choice of appropriate repertoire, effective and efficient score study practices, effective rehearsal and conducting techniques, and instrumental pedagogy.  The intent of this course is to provide teachers with renewed inspiration and with new strategies to employ in their daily teaching.  Central to this concept will be the development and the continued growth of the “artist-teacher”.

Instructor: Craig Kirchhoff, Bud Beyer & Dr. Charles Menghini

 

Kirchhoff,_Craig_headshot_2015_CROPCraig Kirchhoff is professor of conducting at the University of Minnesota. Born and educated in Wisconsin, Mr. Kirchhoff brings to his position a wide knowledge of both traditional and contemporary literature. He has won critical acclaim from composers Warren Benson, Henry Brant, Michael Colgrass, Karel Husa, Libby Larsen, George Perle, Vincent Persichetti, Stephen Paulus, Verne Reynolds, Gunther Schuller, Joseph Schwantner, Steven Stucky, Elliott Schwartz, Chen Yi, and others.

Mr. Kirchhoff is past president of the College Band Directors National Association and is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, the National Band Association, the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and the Music Educators National Conference, and he served as the founding editor and principal advisor of the College Band Directors National Association Journal.

Professor Kirchhoff has appeared as guest conductor, clinician, and lecturer throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Europe, and Scandinavia. Mr. Kirchhoff is a frequent guest conductor of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and has recorded with them on the Kosei Publishing label.

Bud_BeyerBud Beyer, Professor Emeritus in Theatre, Northwestern University, joined the faculty in 1972 and served as head of the Acting Program until 1989, when he was chosen to chair the Department of Theatre. He stepped down as chair in 2002, and retired from Northwestern in 2008.  Professor Beyer was also Founder and Director of the Northwestern University Mime Company established in 1972, which toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. A member of SAG, AEA, and AFTRA, Bud has professional credits as an actor, director, and theatre manager, and has taught intensive scene study for professional actors in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. He has conducted workshops in mime and acting for colleges, universities and festivals across the United States and published, with Charlotte Lee, Speaking of Theatre, Scott Foresman and Company (1974). He was also featured in The New Generation of Acting Teachers written by Eva Meckler (1988) and Acting Teachers of America, a vital tradition by Ronald Rand and Luigi Scorcia (2007).

During the past thirty years, Bud has presented lectures and workshops on gesture and movement for orchestral and band conductors throughout the country. He gave yearly residencies at the University of Minnesota, Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens-Point.  In recent years, Bud has been working with professional musicians, and has given workshops for entire orchestras, singers, instrumentalists and conductors in Norway. He is working with the Grieg Academy in Bergen, and with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra in Oslo, exploring new approaches to the training of musicians and the performance of music. A Norwegian research and performance project, EUIPAF, The Explosive, Unforeseeable Instant of Musical Performance: Applications and Foundations, will examine artistic projects in collaboration with Bud and his concepts and process for emotional connection within the framework of musical interpretation and performance.  A thirty-minute documentary of his work, Smile, you have an audience, is available on Norwegian Educational Television.

 In 2013, Bud wrote Sirkelen Sluttes: Bevisstgjøring og Endring i Formidling av Musikk, published in Norwegian through Universitetsforlaget in Oslo.  In January of 2014, he directed a project with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.  The final performance was an acclaimed production of Verklärte Nacht Opus 4 (1899) by Schoenberg. This work was followed with a new production with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra of Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen für 23 Solostreicher (1944-45) in the Spring of 2015.

In 2014, GIA Publications, Inc in Chicago, Illinois published Bud's book, Completing the Circle: Considerations for Change in the Performance of Music.

 

Menghini2Dr. Charles T. Menghini is President, Professor of Music and Director of Bands at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to his appointment as President in August of 2004, Charlie served as Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Bands. He began his teaching at VanderCook College in 1994 and his teaching has included conducting, organization and administration, curriculum and supervision, brass methods and rehearsal techniques classes. 

Charles Menghini has written for professional journals and magazines including the “Instrumentalist” where he serves as a member of the Board of Advisors. He is also co-author of the Essential Elements 2000 Band Method, published by the Hal Leonard Corporation.

Charlie frequently serves as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and has actively worked with over 350 school and community ensembles from 20 states as well as Canada, Japan, Southeast Asia and Australia. He has conducted all –state ensembles in Wisconsin, North Dakota, Georgia, South Carolina, Nebraska, New York, Virginia, and Minnesota, and has presented numerous clinics at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago and state and regional music educators in-services throughout the world.

Menghini is a Lowell Mason Fellow and is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, and Phi Beta Mu. He was inducted into the Alpha Psi Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda National Honor Society for Music - the highest honor a conservatory faculty can bestow on a student in recognition of outstanding musicianship and scholarly achievement, and is an honorary member of the Xi Kappa (VanderCook College) Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Charlie is an educational consultant for the Hal Leonard Corporation of Milwaukee, WI, and is an educational member of the Music Achievement Council of the NAMM Foundation.  An active performer, Charlie played lead trumpet in the Kansas City Chiefs Professional Football Band for fifteen seasons.

 

Menghini is a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago Near South and is a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.  He is past President of the First Friday Club of Chicago and is the official trumpeter for the City Club of Chicago.
