Recital Highlights

A course highlighting appropriate techniques, procedures and materials for use in teaching flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone and bassoon. Methodologies for teaching hand position, fingering, posture, embouchure, articulation and intonation for all instruments are covered.
VanderCook Online is powered by Schoology ( Through this learning management system, you'll be able to interact directly with your instructor, students in your classes, and members of the greater VanderCook Online community.
Classes this spring term officially begin on Monday, February 4, 2019. The week prior to the Spring 2019 term start date, we will be adding you as a new Schoology user. Be on the lookout for an email from or with log-in instructions between January 28th and February 3rd. Once you are given credentials, simply visit to login. On the morning of February 4th, you'll have access to your classroom and course material.
Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.
You’ll have the opportunity to work at your own pace each week while completing assignments and posting responses to discussion questions. You’ll constantly be interacting with your instructor and classmates online, and working through new material each week. We know how crazy school schedules can get, so our instructors try to make everything as flexible as possible!
Courses are scheduled for 13 weeks, with one week (March 18-24, 2019) being a designated week off for Spring Break. The Spring Online Term ends Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Instructor: Ruth A. Rhodes


Ruth A. Rhodes is Dean of Graduate Studies and Professor of Music Education at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago.  As Dean, she is responsible for the full range of activities pertaining to the academic and musical life of the students enrolled in the graduate program, which is one of the largest in the U.S.  She currently teaches woodwind courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and served as professor of clarinet at VanderCook College for 18 years.  She is very proud to have served her alma mater for over 40 years as a faculty member and administrator.
Ms. Rhodes received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music and her Master of Music degree from Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University.  She is a clarinetist with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra; co-founded and performed with the chamber group Ensemble d’Accord (which performed live on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series on WFMT); performed with the Opera Theater of Illinois for several seasons; and has performed with the Orchestra of Illinois and Lyric Opera of Chicago.  She has had great fun performing with the Moody Blues, Kansas, Led Zeppelin, ABBA, Mannheim Steamroller, Cherish the Ladies, Itzhak Perlman, Leon Fleischer, Marilyn Horne, Frank Sinatra Jr., Shirley Jones, Pete Fountain, and Tony Bennett to name a few.
Her articles have been published in Bandworld Magazine and in The Instrumentalist; she served as a woodwind consultant on the Essential Elements Band Method DVD for the Hal Leonard Publishing Co., and was an adjudicator for the Boosey & Hawkes Buffet-Crampon Clarinet Competition.


Registration for all online courses closes at 12:00 noon CST on February 1, 2019. All online courses will begin on February 4, 2019 and conclude on May 5, 2019.

MMEd students (2-credit option): register for 552
2 graduate credits: $1,071 tuition, due in full with registration
MECA students (3-credit option): register for 7625
3 graduate credits: $930 tuition, due in full with registration
Advanced Woodwind Methods has two course levels. Students enrolled in the MMEd program at VanderCook are eligible to enroll in online courses at the 500 level. Students not enrolled in the MMEd program who wish to earn graduate credit as a MECA Continuing Education student should register at the 7000 level. The difference in credits earned and tuition cost is attributed to the difference in tuition rates for the MMEd and MECA Continuing Education programs.
