"By better managing the non-musical demands of your position, you free up more of your time, and mind, to address the real reason you chose the profession of music education; to help students experience the joys and challenge of making music. “Organization and administration alone cannot make an ensemble sound good, but a lack of them can keep it from doing so.”   - David Gregory

The course is designed to equip music educators with the tools, skills and strategies to successfully manage the job’s many non-musical responsibilities. Responsibilities that can consume up to 50% of the position. Topics include effective communication practices, data management and analysis, budget development and management, scheduling and staffing, evaluation and assessment of students and staff, change, building positive relationships, recruiting and retention of students and staff, and arts education advocacy. One product of the class will be an annual plan that organizes curriculum, events, professional development and advocacy activities. An online session will be held weekly.

A review from summer 2015:

I just completed a summer MECA course from VanderCook - Music Administration 101 - basically everything you want to know about running a successful music program after the bell rings and class is over.  This course was taught primarily by Rick Coulter, a retired Fine Arts administrator.  I will say that after one bachelor's program and two master's programs, this was easily among the best courses I have ever taken.”
