6797 Introduction To Orff Schulwerk

This course provides an opportunity to experience the Orff approach, a hands-on, creative method for teaching general music. Students will sing, play barred instruments and other percussion as well as recorder, dance, and most of all, create!  Discussions focus on how this approach can impact curriculum and assessment as well as how it aligns with the Danielson Framework and Common Core Standards.

Required materials: Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a soprano recorder.

Instructor: Jean Hersey

hersey_jeanJean Hersey is a National Board certified teacher at Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest, IL, where she has worked for the past 14 years. She teaches fifth and sixth grade general music. In 2012, she won the district’s Innovative Practice Award for her Spring General Music Show, which incorporated music, art, drama, and social studies curricula, and reflected the Medieval and Renaissance time periods. Hersey is also Level I Pedagogy and Movement instructor at VanderCook College of Music.

WEEKEND MECA COURSES

Saturday classes are generally held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch break are scheduled. Sunday classes are generally held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with one 15-minute break scheduled. Individual schedules and break times may vary per individual instructor.
