7557 Relational Pedagogy: Community, Culture, and Leadership in Your Music Program

 

 

Music teachers and student-musicians connect in multiple ways through various interaction at school. As such, music programs are often a place where students feel they "belong" or connected to others. This course honors these connections, addressing pedagogy and practice that balances established boundaries with modelling of healthy, reciprocal, responsible and respectful relationships.

Instructor: Mark Reid

Mark ReidMark Reid is the Arts Education Coordinator at the British Columbia Ministry of Education. He is the former Director of Bands & Choirs at Vancouver Technical Secondary School, 2013 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year, and a Finalist for the 2015 Global Teacher Prize. Mark holds degrees from VanderCook College of Music (MMEd) and the University of Victoria (BMus). A career volunteer, he serves as Past-President of the Canadian Music Educators’ Association, Secretary of the Coalition for Music Education in Canada, as a member of Phi Beta Mu, and on the Program Advisory Council for Music at Vancouver Community College. Mark is a charter member of the Varkey Teacher Ambassadors. Mark has lectured at the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria, and Brandon University. His arrangements for concert band and string orchestra have been published by Tempo Press and Grand Mesa Music. In 2016, Mark is pleased to be the Guest Conductor for Vancouver’s Cor Flammae. Recent engagement in professional development includes presenting at the Disney Performing Arts Educators Summit: Inspiring Brilliance, organizing the Pre-Summit Day for Teaching Professionals in conjunction with the 5th International Summit on the Teaching Profession (Berlin, Germany), and an invitation to the Global Education and Skills Forum (Dubai, UAE).

VanderCook Online is powered by Schoology (www.schoology.com). Through this learning management system, you'll be able to interact directly with your instructor, students in your classes, and members of the greater VanderCook Online community.
 
Classes this spring term officially begin on Monday, February 4, 2019. The week prior to the Spring 2019 term start date, we will be adding you as a new Schoology user. Be on the lookout for an email from noreply@schoology.com or wfong@vandercook.edu with log-in instructions between January 28th and February 3rd. Once you are given credentials, simply visit www.online.vandercook.edu to login. On the morning of February 4th, you'll have access to your classroom and course material.
 
Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.
 
You’ll have the opportunity to work at your own pace each week while completing assignments and posting responses to discussion questions. You’ll constantly be interacting with your instructor and classmates online, and working through new material each week. We know how crazy school schedules can get, so our instructors try to make everything as flexible as possible!
 
Courses are scheduled for 13 weeks, with one week (March 18-24, 2019) being a designated week off for Spring Break. The Spring Online Term ends Sunday, May 5, 2019.
