Orff Schulwerk Teacher Education: Level I

All online MECA courses begin on

The registration deadline for online classes is Friday, September 13, at 12:00 noon CST.

for specific dates. Registration for all on-campus courses closes two weeks prior to the course start date.

Beginning September 1, regular 3-credit tuition applies ($1,050 for 3 credits)

Orff Schulwerk Teacher Education: Level I

Learn the fundamentals of Orff Schulwerk, an active approach to music education. This course will include speech, singing and movement activities, as well as playing recorder, Orff instruments and unpitched percussion.

Recorders and texts will be provided. A bachelor's degree in music is required. 

Instructors: Jean Hersey, Cynthia Seputis & Ben Torres

hersey_jeanJean Hersey is a National Board Certified General Music Specialist with expertise in Orff Schulwerk. A graduate of the University of Illinois in music education and performance, Hersey also has a master’s degree in performance from Northwestern University. She has received extensive training in the Orff approach, and is certified to teach Level I courses. Hersey presently teaches 5/6 Music in Lake Forest, as well as Level I Orff, Orff Curriculum and Design, and Intro to Orff every year at VanderCook. She has presented Orff workshops both locally and nationally. Also trained as an opera singer, Hersey spent several years performing in Italy. In 2002, she earned National Board Certification, which was renewed in 2012. In 2012, she won District 67’s Innovative Practice Award for her Spring General Music Show, which incorporated music, art, drama and social studies curricula, reflecting the Medieval and Renaissance time periods. Her teaching experience ranges from nursery through post-graduate levels.
 
Seputis,_Cynthia_headshot_2012Cynthia Seputis has taught elementary general music at George B. Carpenter Elementary School in Park Ridge, IL for 27 years. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and Northwestern University, she completed her Orff-Schulwerk teacher training levels at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas with Jeff Kriske, Randy DeLelles and Shirley McRae. She has been the recorder teacher for the Orff-Schulwerk teacher training course at VanderCook for over 15 years, where she has also co-taught Orff Curriculum and Design and Orff Without Instruments...It Can be Done! Seputis is passionate about the ukulele and is excited to share her experience and knowledge with members of FVAOSA. She is a regional presenter and is proud to have been part of the VanderCook Orff team since the program's inception over 15 years ago.
 
Ben_TorresBen Torres is in his 12th year in the Richardson (TX) school district and his fourth year as the K-6 music specialist at Brentfield Elementary in Dallas, where he also directs the Brentfield Singers, the Rhythm Cats Orff Ensemble and serves as the JJ Pearce Area Team Leader. Prior to this, he was the K-6 music specialist at Richland Elementary, where he also directed a choir and an Orff ensemble, the latter of which was selected to perform at the 2011 TMEA Convention. Torres received his bachelor’s degree in music education from West Texas A&M University in Canyon. He teaches movement in the Orff Schulwerk training course at Trinity University in San Antonio, movement and recorder in the Orff Schulwerk course at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, and other courses across the country. He is currently the president of the North Texas Chapter of the AOSA.
