Band Director Academy

Band Director Academy (BDA) is a multi-day professional development workshop for band directors. BDA will be held Friday, June 22 – Monday, June 25, 2018 at New York City’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC). The workshop is led by Rodney Whitaker, Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, and Terell Stafford, Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University, in addition to other prominent jazz educators.

BDA focuses on the essentials of teaching jazz, emphasizing hands-on learning and practical techniques. This four-day session will focus on improvisation. By utilizing listening, demonstration, discussion and then practical application, attendees will gain an insight into how to transfer these specific techniques to their band room.

For more than 20 years, JALC’s “Essentially Ellington” program has been a popular aspect of many school jazz programs. Whether you are a seasoned “EE veteran” or fresh out of school, teaching in a fully fledged program or just starting out, playing Ellington’s music will enrich the lives of your students and community, whether urban, suburban, rural or somewhere in between. JALC believe in a practical, literature-based approach that is informed by the aesthetic choices made by the greatest composers, arrangers and practitioners of America's music: jazz.
