7886 Technology Integration for the Modern Music Educator

Do you struggle to integrate technology as you strive to be a better teacher? Or perhaps you feel like your students know more about technology than you do? This course will fully prepare you to integrate technology as a way to enhance your teaching and professional development. Discover free tools and online software to create practical, engaging lessons and assignments for your students, and learn how social media can help improve your craft by creating a professional learning network (PLN). We will continue to explore other digital tools to help you become a more skilled and effective music educator.

 

Required materials: What Connected Educators Do Differently by Whitaker, Zoul & Casas (ISBN-13: 978-1138832008), laptop or desktop computer, and Google Chrome browser. Webcam is optional.

Ozsvath,_Keith_headshot_2013Keith Ozsvath is passionate about teaching music, integrating technology, and professional development. He joined the music faculty at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia, Illinois in 2000 and continues to team teach concert band and direct the Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Ozsvath is an active adjudicator and clinician in the Chicago area. He is a member of the American School Band Directors Association, been recognized twice by “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” and is an Eagle Scout. He has been an Illinois Summer Youth Music conductor at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. Additionally, he has presented sessions at the National Middle School Association Conference, Illinois Music Educators All-State Conference, and at VanderCook College of Music. Keith is a self-professed techie and his blog, Teaching Band & More, provides practical teaching ideas for music educators. He has conducted numerous professional development classes for fellow educators on educational technology, including podcasting, blogging, web 2.0 tools and using social media as a professional development tool. He serves as an advisor and moderator for the 10,000+ member Band Director Group on Facebook.

VanderCook Online is powered by Schoology (www.schoology.com). Through this learning management system, you'll be able to interact directly with your instructor, students in your classes, and members of the greater VanderCook Online community.
 
Fall term classes officially begin on Monday, September 18. Soon after you register, you'll be added as a new Schoology user. Be on the lookout for an email from Schoology with log-in instructions. Once you are given credentials, simply visit www.online.vandercook.edu to login. On the morning of September 18, students are added to classes, at which point you'll have access to your classroom and course material.
 
Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.
 
You’ll have the opportunity to work at your own pace each week while completing assignments and posting responses to discussion questions. You’ll constantly be interacting with your instructor and classmates online, and working through new material each week. We know how crazy school schedules can get, so our instructors try to make everything as flexible as possible!
 
The Fall Online Term runs from September 18 until December 17, 2017 (13 weeks). There are no Online classes the week of November 20-26 because of fall break).
 
Online grades will be reported by December 20th. If you are in need of a transcript please visit the online transcript request page. If you are in need a quick turn around time for your transcript please submit the transcript request to the registrar prior to the end of your course(s).
