6834 General Music Pre-K-5: A Practical Approach to Putting All the Pieces in Place

This hands-on course is designed for general music, choral and band music educators who teach elementary general music. Using practical tools, effective strategies and best practice models, this course will help you to establish clear, sequential curricular objectives through movement, song, story, poetry, speech, instruments, children’s literature, active listening, improvisation and composition. Using active music-making elements from Orff, Kodály, Dalcroze and Gordon approaches, this course provides an array of resources for planning, presenting, implementing, assessing and evaluating lessons within an effective curricular framework customized to your unique teaching situations.

Manju Durairaj was born and raised in India. She studied in London, England, and was involved in graduate research projects on comparative pedagogical practices of Indian (carnatic) and Western Music. She graduated with her second master’s degree from VanderCook College of Music, Chicago. Manju is certified in Orff-Schulwerk, completing her levels training at VanderCook College, George Mason University, University of St. Thomas, and at the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria. Manju currently teaches Pre K-5 general music at the Latin School of Chicago. She is president of the Greater Chicago Orff Chapter. She has presented at ISME, AOSA, OAKE, ILMEA, ECMMA, MKMEA and NAfME (formerly MENC) and has been published in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education.
