7526 Techniques and Resources for Teaching & Incorporating Alternative Styles

 

An exploration of teaching techniques for incorporating alternative style music in the orchestra classroom, as well as how to expand any strictly traditional program, from rhythmic exercises to specific bow techniques. Resources for fiddling, jazz, Latin and rock selections for all grade levels will be explored.

Lynne Latham (b. 1960) earned a B.M. and M.M. in cello performance from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. For 20 years, she maintained a private studio of violin, viola, and cello students in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina area. Ms. Latham is a frequent freelance performer and conductor with local chamber groups and orchestras. She is often a clinician/conductor at string clinics and educator conferences throughout the United States and Canada. In 1992, Ms. Latham founded Latham Music, a music publishing company specializing in music for strings. In 2007, Latham Music was acquired by The Lorenz Corporation and Lynne was hired as Executive Editor for Latham Music. In April 2013, LudwigMasters Publications purchased Latham Music. Lynne now serves as their String Editor.

Registration for all online courses closes at 12:00 noon CST on February 1, 2019. All online courses will begin on February 4, 2019 and conclude on May 5, 2019.

Classes this spring term officially begin on Monday, February 4, 2019. The week prior to the Spring 2019 term start date, we will be adding you as a new Schoology user. Be on the lookout for an email from noreply@schoology.com or wfong@vandercook.edu with log-in instructions between January 28th and February 3rd. Once you are given credentials, simply visit www.online.vandercook.edu to login. On the morning of February 4th, you'll have access to your classroom and course material.
 
Some courses have specific online chat meeting times (please see course descriptions), while others have a flexible meeting schedule. You can expect all courses to meet together in a live online chat. If a live meeting time doesn’t work, you can work with your instructor to make other arrangements.
 
You’ll have the opportunity to work at your own pace each week while completing assignments and posting responses to discussion questions. You’ll constantly be interacting with your instructor and classmates online, and working through new material each week. We know how crazy school schedules can get, so our instructors try to make everything as flexible as possible!
 
Courses are scheduled for 13 weeks, with one week (March 18-24, 2019) being a designated week off for Spring Break. The Spring Online Term ends Sunday, May 5, 2019.
