Biography: Prolific
choral and hand bell composer Ruth Artman has more than 200 works in print.
She began her serious compositional career by customizing choral music for
her various school and church choirs. She is a five-time ASCAP Award recipient,
holds an honorary Doctor of Music degree from VanderCook College, and received
the 1989 Alumni Achievement Citation for Professional Accomplishment from
Westminster College in Pennsylvania.
Along with teaching public school music on all levels from kindergarten through
graduate school for 26 years in Indiana and Illinois, she has been actively
involved in numerous church music programs as choral director. Choirs under
her direction consistently received First Place ratings in ISSMA-sponsored
contest events.
She has appeared professionally throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, conducting ensembles and festivals, reading clinics, workshops and seminars, as well as adjudicating contests. She conducted clinics at VanderCook College in 1990 and 1991.
About the Collection: The Artman collection contains over 150 individual titles in a variety of forms: songs, spirituals, mini-musicals, revues, and more. Artman assumes a variety of roles, including composer, arranger, and lyricist. Most are vocal works, a capella or with various accompaniment. Several works are for hand bell choir.
The collection is housed in Ruppel Memorial Library. This special collection is stored separately from the general stacks and is non-circulating.
